JOHN
John Ripley grew up in the Washington, DC area before attending Texas A&M University and participating in the world famous Fightin' Texas Aggie Band. As a United States Marine Officer he had the really tough duty of serving in Hawaii where he met his wife and fellow music lover Christine. Together they relocated to Perth, West Australia to serve in the development of a local church there and were instrumental in the formation and development of that worship team. From as early as 4th grade John has been carrying drumsticks to church and pounding on just about anything in an effort to add to the worship experience. As a drummer John has enjoyed playing at just about anytime and for just about anyone. Whether it's a ship full of passengers aboard a Celebrity or Disney Cruise ship or 50,000 screaming fans in Texas Stadium, simply put, music is just part of John's life.
As the resident "old guy" in the band, John is thrilled to be a part of this revolution in music where orthodox biblical truth melds with passionate guitar licks to create a sound that stirs the souls of all who listen. He is committed to the art of songwriting and the presentation of the Good News of the Bible through the medium of music. John also serves as the Business Manager of Generation Letter and would be more than happy to discuss opportunities to partner with your organization for the furtherance of our mission to see the world reached with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
AN INTERVIEW WITH JOHN
What inspired you to play music?
I was in 3rd grade watching the 4th graders play in the concert band at school and got hooked. My music teacher Mrs. Meese and my parents encouraged me to keep applying my skills until I actually discovered I could play. Then for nearly 35 years my entire family has encouraged and supported me to play my heart out in whatever musical situation I find myself in. I still remember countless hours and miles going to and from drum lessons with my Mom; I trust she finds great reward in that investment!
What is your favorite food?
Anything Thai - Tom Ka Gai (Ginger Chicken Soup) with rice is #1!!
Who is your favorite Band?
Well the guys in the band think it's ABBA or any other white spandex wearing crew from the 1980's, but actually I would have to say that narrowing it down to just one is a really unfair question. If I have to pick just one... Switchfoot.
What is your favorite scripture verse?
1 Corinthians 16:13 Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.
What person is your greatest role model?
Again, this seems like an unfair question as so many people have had a monumental impact in my life. Over the course of all these years, my Grandmother, Willene Keenum would have to be the most consistent influence. She is a 92 year old follower of Christ who still encourages me to play drums and rock out for Jesus. My first "church gig" was made possible by her. I am sure she never envisioned Generation Letter when she had me play "Up from the grave He arose" that Easter morning in 1976, but if you listen clearly, you can hear that truth in every song we sing!
